What are funding rates?
Funding rates are periodic payments between long and short traders on perpetual futures contracts. They keep the perpetual contract price close to the spot price. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts, indicating bullish sentiment. When negative, shorts pay longs, indicating bearish sentiment. Rates are typically paid every 8 hours on Binance.
How to use this data
- High positive rates may signal an overheated market or potential short-term top.
- High negative rates may signal excessive bearish leverage or potential short squeeze.
- Annualized rate shows the projected yearly cost of holding a position, assuming the current rate persists.
