What is Immutable?
Immutable (IMX) is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum designed specifically for NFTs and blockchain gaming, using StarkEx zero-knowledge rollup technology to enable gas-free NFT minting and trading while inheriting Ethereum's security. Founded by the team behind the Gods Unchained trading card game, Immutable transitioned from Immutable X (StarkEx-based) to Immutable zkEVM — a ZK-powered Ethereum-equivalent chain — giving developers full EVM compatibility for game smart contracts without sacrificing scalability. IMX is the network's native utility token, used for transaction fees, governance, and staking.
Immutable's core value proposition is purpose-built infrastructure for blockchain gaming and NFT marketplaces. The original Immutable X used StarkEx's validium architecture: transactions are batched and proven off-chain using STARK proofs, with only the proof submitted to Ethereum mainnet, achieving tens of thousands of transactions per second at near-zero cost. NFT minting on Immutable X is gas-free for users, with fees structured as a percentage of marketplace trades instead. The Immutable zkEVM, built in partnership with Polygon, extended this to support full EVM smart contracts, enabling complex game logic — item crafting, tournament systems, on-chain economies — that the original design could not accommodate. Games including Gods Unchained, Guild of Guardians, Illuvium, and several major studio projects have committed to or launched on Immutable, making it one of the more credibly adopted gaming chains.
The persistent challenge for Immutable is that NFT gaming's total addressable market has contracted sharply from 2021 peaks. Many high-profile Web3 games have failed to retain players after launch incentives expired, raising structural questions about whether blockchain-native ownership genuinely improves games or primarily serves as a fundraising mechanism. IMX token demand is tied to gaming activity fees and staking; if games on the platform do not generate sustained player engagement, fee revenue remains limited. Competition from other gaming-focused chains (Ronin, Beam, Arbitrum Orbit chains) adds fragmentation risk. The pivot to zkEVM also means Immutable now competes in the general EVM L2 space, where Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base have substantial head starts.

Immutable FAQ
What is the difference between Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM?+
Immutable X (the original product) uses StarkEx's validium architecture, optimized for high-throughput NFT transfers with a custom API. It is not EVM-compatible, meaning only StarkEx-native smart contracts work on it. Immutable zkEVM is a full EVM-compatible ZK rollup, allowing developers to deploy standard Solidity smart contracts. Most new games build on zkEVM; Immutable X remains operational for existing projects.
How does Immutable achieve gas-free NFT minting?+
On Immutable X, minting fees are not paid by users in gas but are absorbed into the marketplace fee model — trades on the Immutable marketplace incur a 2% protocol fee, which covers the cost of batching and proving transactions. STARK proofs allow thousands of mints to be verified in a single on-chain transaction, dramatically reducing per-mint costs compared to Ethereum L1.
What is the IMX token used for?+
IMX is used to pay transaction fees on the Immutable network (both X and zkEVM), to stake for protocol rewards, and to participate in governance votes on protocol parameters. A portion of every NFT trade conducted on Immutable-powered marketplaces generates a fee denominated in IMX, creating demand proportional to marketplace trading volume.
