What is Solana?
Solana is a high-throughput layer-1 blockchain that combines proof-of-stake with a unique ordering mechanism called Proof of History (PoH), enabling it to process thousands of transactions per second at sub-cent fees without relying on sharding or layer-2 solutions. Designed explicitly to compete with Visa-scale payment volumes in a single-shard architecture, it has become the dominant chain for consumer-facing crypto applications including meme coins, NFT trading, and retail DeFi. Its performance advantages come with a documented history of network instability.
Solana's architecture separates time-ordering from consensus: validators use PoH (a verifiable delay function producing a cryptographic clock) to agree on event ordering before the heavier BFT consensus step. This pipeline allows parallel transaction processing and accounts for the throughput claims of 50,000+ theoretical TPS, though sustained real-world throughput under load has typically been lower. The runtime model processes transactions against 'accounts' stored in memory, making Solana fundamentally optimized for hardware with large RAM and fast SSDs — validator costs are substantially higher than on Ethereum, which affects decentralization.
Solana's most documented weakness is network reliability. The chain suffered multiple complete or partial outages between 2021 and 2023, with causes ranging from bots flooding the transaction queue to consensus bugs to resource exhaustion from NFT minting traffic. Validators have had to restart the network via coordinated off-chain communication — a process that can take hours and underscores the role of a relatively small, identifiable validator set. The FTX/Alameda collapse in November 2022 also hurt Solana disproportionately: FTX and Alameda were major investors, validators, and ecosystem backers, and SOL lost roughly 95% of its peak value during that period before recovering.

Solana FAQ
Why has Solana had so many network outages?+
Several outages stemmed from the network being flooded with spam transactions — particularly from bots competing for NFT mints or arbitrage — which overwhelmed the validator memory pool and caused the network to halt. Others were caused by bugs in specific software versions. Solana has addressed some of these issues through QUIC (a UDP-based transport that allows rate-limiting) and stake-weighted quality of service, which prioritizes transactions from staked validators. The architecture's optimization for speed over redundancy means edge cases under extreme load are harder to handle gracefully.
What is Proof of History and how does it differ from proof-of-work?+
Proof of History is not a consensus mechanism — it is a timekeeping tool. It uses a sequential hash function to produce a verifiable record of elapsed time, allowing validators to agree on event ordering without communicating the timestamp of every message. Proof-of-work, by contrast, is the full consensus mechanism in Bitcoin: miners compete to solve puzzles, and the winner proposes the next block. Solana uses PoH in combination with a tower BFT consensus protocol for actual finality.
Is Solana truly decentralized?+
By most metrics, Solana is more centralized than Ethereum. The validator set numbers in the thousands, but stake is concentrated among a smaller set of high-performance validators due to hardware requirements. The Solana Foundation has historically held significant influence over the ecosystem, and past outage recoveries required coordinated validator communication through off-chain channels like Discord — which is not possible on a fully permissionless network.
