What is Internet Computer?
Internet Computer (ICP) is a general-purpose blockchain developed by the DFINITY Foundation that aims to host smart contracts, websites, and full-stack decentralized applications directly on-chain, eliminating the need for traditional cloud infrastructure. Rather than executing code on a single virtual machine as Ethereum does, ICP uses a network of independent data centers running a novel consensus protocol called Threshold Relay, organized into "subnets" that process computation in parallel. Its native token, ICP, is used for governance, paying for computation (via conversion to "cycles"), and staking in the Network Nervous System (NNS).
Internet Computer's architecture is genuinely distinctive: applications deployed as "canisters" (WebAssembly-based smart contracts) can serve HTTP requests directly, meaning a fully decentralized website or social application can run without AWS, Google Cloud, or Cloudflare in the stack. The NNS governs the protocol through liquid democracy, where ICP staked in "neurons" votes on network upgrades and parameters. This has enabled rapid protocol iteration. Real-world deployments include OpenChat (a decentralized messaging app), DSCVR (social media), and Sonic (a DEX), all running entirely on-chain. Cycle pricing targets compute at approximately 1 trillion cycles per 1 SDR of value, intended to provide stable and predictable costs for developers.
ICP carries persistent criticisms that potential users should understand. First, despite calling itself decentralized, DFINITY controls a substantial portion of voting power in the NNS, giving the foundation significant de facto governance influence over a protocol it claims is community-run. Second, ICP launched in May 2021 at prices implying a fully diluted market cap exceeding $400 billion, only to lose more than 95% of its value within months — a trajectory linked to alleged insider token dumping by early investors, which was documented by on-chain analysts and generated lasting reputational damage. Third, the node hardware requirements are substantial (enterprise-grade servers in data centers), meaning participation is not permissionless in the way that Ethereum or Bitcoin are, creating concentration risk among the registered node providers.

Internet Computer FAQ
What makes Internet Computer different from Ethereum or Solana?+
ICP is designed to host full applications — including frontends, backends, and databases — entirely on-chain, whereas Ethereum and Solana are smart-contract platforms where frontends typically run on centralized web infrastructure. ICP canisters can serve HTTP directly to browsers. This is a meaningfully different design goal, though it comes with tradeoffs around decentralization of the node network.
What are "cycles" on Internet Computer?+
Cycles are the unit of compute cost on ICP. Developers convert ICP tokens into cycles to pay for the computation, memory, and storage used by their canisters. Cycles are pegged to a basket of fiat currencies (SDR) rather than to the ICP token price, so application running costs remain relatively predictable regardless of token price volatility.
Is the Network Nervous System truly decentralized?+
The NNS allows any ICP holder to participate in governance by staking in neurons, and voting power increases with stake size and lockup duration. However, DFINITY Foundation neurons hold a large share of voting power, and many community neurons follow DFINITY-aligned neurons by default. The protocol is more decentralized than a company-run blockchain, but less so than Bitcoin or Ethereum at the governance layer.
