What is Mantle?

Mantle Network is an Ethereum layer-2 optimistic rollup that emerged from the BitDAO ecosystem rebranding and treasury reallocation in 2023. It uses a modular architecture that separates transaction execution, data availability, and finality into distinct layers, and it employs EigenDA (from EigenLayer) for off-chain data availability rather than posting all calldata to Ethereum mainnet. MNT is the network's native gas and governance token.

Mantle's technical differentiation lies in its data availability strategy: by using EigenDA instead of posting data directly to Ethereum, Mantle significantly reduces the per-transaction cost of data availability — one of the largest components of L2 gas fees. This makes it particularly attractive for high-frequency applications like perpetual DEXs and gaming protocols. The project launched with substantial treasury backing from the BitDAO treasury (one of the largest DAO treasuries at the time of conversion to Mantle), which funded ecosystem grants and liquidity mining programs to bootstrap adoption.

The risks are meaningful. Optimistic rollups carry an inherent 7-day withdrawal challenge period, meaning assets bridged to Mantle cannot return to Ethereum instantly without using third-party liquidity providers who charge a fee. EigenDA, while reducing costs, introduces a dependency on EigenLayer's restaking security model, which is itself a relatively novel and unaudited-at-scale mechanism. The governance structure, inherited from the BitDAO/BIT token migration, concentrated significant voting power among early treasury holders, raising questions about decentralization that are common to DAO-governed L2s.
