What is VeChain?

VeChain is an enterprise-focused layer-1 blockchain designed specifically for supply chain traceability, product authentication, and IoT-driven data verification. Originally launched in 2015 as part of BitSE before spinning out as VeChain Foundation, the network migrated to its own mainnet (VeChainThor) in 2018 and operates under a dual-token model: VET is the value-transfer and governance token, while VTHO is the gas token generated continuously by holding VET. VeChainThor's architecture separates economic activity (VET) from transaction fee costs (VTHO), which allows enterprises to predict operational costs without exposure to VET market volatility. The chain uses a proof-of-authority consensus model with 101 Authority Masternodes, a design choice that trades decentralization for high transaction throughput and finality suitable for enterprise SLAs. On-chain tools include multi-party payment and multi-task transactions, which support complex real-world B2B workflows without smart contract complexity. VeChain has been deployed for cold-chain logistics (food safety in Walmart China), luxury goods authentication (embedded NFC chips linked to VeChain NFTs), and carbon footprint tracking across automotive supply chains.

The persistent tension in VeChain's positioning is that proof-of-authority consensus is inherently permissioned and centralized — the 101 authority nodes are vetted entities, not permissionless participants. This makes the network closer to a private consortium blockchain than a public chain in practice, and critics argue the "blockchain" label is primarily a marketing differentiation rather than a technical necessity for its use cases. Token price has historically been driven by partnership announcements rather than organic on-chain usage metrics, and many announced enterprise deployments have not reached publicly verifiable production scale.
