What is Aptos?

Aptos is a layer-1 blockchain developed by former Meta (Facebook) employees who worked on the abandoned Diem (formerly Libra) stablecoin project, and it uses the Move programming language originally developed for Diem. Launched on mainnet in October 2022, Aptos employs a parallel transaction execution engine called Block-STM that processes non-conflicting transactions simultaneously rather than sequentially, targeting throughput significantly higher than single-threaded EVM chains. Aptos Labs raised over $350 million across two funding rounds from investors including a16z Crypto and FTX Ventures prior to mainnet launch.

The core technical innovations in Aptos center on Block-STM and the Move language. Block-STM is an optimistic concurrency control system: the execution engine speculatively runs all transactions in parallel and validates them after execution, rolling back only those that have read-write conflicts. For workloads with mostly independent transactions (the common case), this achieves near-linear throughput scaling with additional hardware. Move is a bytecode language with an ownership and borrowing system (inspired by Rust) that makes certain classes of smart contract vulnerabilities — particularly reentrancy and integer overflow — structurally impossible at the language level, providing stronger safety guarantees than Solidity.

Aptos launched with significant controversy over tokenomics transparency. The initial circulating supply and unlock schedule were not clearly disclosed before launch, and when mainnet went live, the community discovered that a large proportion of the token supply allocated to early investors and insiders was subject to shorter lock-up periods than comparable projects. The FTX Ventures involvement in the funding round also created negative association after FTX's November 2022 collapse. Despite strong technical foundations, Aptos competes in a crowded non-EVM L1 space alongside Sui (developed by a parallel team from the same Diem/Move lineage), and both chains have attracted substantial DeFi TVL but have not yet demonstrated the developer ecosystem scale of Ethereum or Solana.

Aptos FAQ

What is the Move programming language and how does it differ from Solidity?+

Move is a statically typed bytecode language originally developed for Meta's Diem blockchain. Its primary safety innovation is a resource type system that enforces scarcity and ownership at the language level: digital assets are defined as resource types that cannot be copied or implicitly discarded, only explicitly moved between storage locations. This prevents double-spend bugs and certain reentrancy vulnerabilities that have caused hundreds of millions in Solidity contract exploits. Move is compiled to bytecode verified on-chain before execution.

What is Block-STM and how does parallel transaction execution work on Aptos?+

Block-STM (Software Transactional Memory) is Aptos's parallel execution engine. When a block of transactions arrives, Block-STM speculatively executes all transactions in parallel using multiple threads, tracking which storage locations each transaction reads and writes. After execution, it validates the results for conflicts (cases where one transaction read a value that a parallel transaction wrote). Conflicting transactions are re-executed; non-conflicting results are committed. For typical on-chain workloads where most transactions touch different accounts, this achieves significantly higher throughput than sequential execution.

What is the connection between Aptos and Meta's Diem project?+

Meta (Facebook) announced the Libra (later renamed Diem) blockchain project in 2019, developing both the Move language and a BFT consensus protocol called DiemBFT. The project faced intense regulatory opposition and Meta shut it down in early 2022. Key engineers from the Diem team subsequently founded Aptos Labs and Mysten Labs (builders of Sui), both using Move and variants of DiemBFT consensus, effectively continuing Diem's technical work as independent public blockchains.
