What is Shiba Inu?

Shiba Inu is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token launched anonymously in August 2020 under the pseudonym Ryoshi, initially positioned as a meme coin rival to Dogecoin and self-described as a Dogecoin killer. The project has since expanded into a broader ecosystem including the ShibaSwap decentralized exchange, the BONE governance token, the LEASH token, and an Ethereum L2 named Shibarium. SHIB has a total supply of one quadrillion tokens, half of which were sent to Vitalik Buterin, who burned approximately 41% of the total supply to a dead wallet in May 2021.

Shiba Inu's technical infrastructure is standard ERC-20 — it carries no novel consensus mechanism, native VM, or cryptographic innovation. Its value proposition has been community-driven, with an unusually large and active retail holder base. ShibaSwap is an Automated Market Maker (AMM) modeled after Uniswap v2, where SHIB holders can provide liquidity or stake SHIB to earn BONE rewards. Shibarium is an Ethereum L2 using Polygon's PoS sidechain technology with BONE as the gas token; it is intended to reduce SHIB transaction costs and enable lower-cost gaming and metaverse applications for the ecosystem. The Shiba Inu team has also announced Shib: The Metaverse, a virtual land project.

The most significant and durable risks of SHIB are its token supply and speculative volatility. Even after Buterin's burn, the circulating supply remains in the hundreds of trillions, meaning price movements are driven almost entirely by sentiment and retail inflows rather than fundamental utility metrics. SHIB has historically moved in near-perfect correlation with Dogecoin during meme-coin cycles, suggesting limited independent value drivers. Shibarium's launch in August 2023 was disrupted by bridge congestion that temporarily halted the chain, and TVL on ShibaSwap has remained a small fraction of major DeFi platforms. The anonymous founding team and lack of a traditional corporate entity make governance accountability structurally different from projects with identifiable foundations.
